September Monthly Meeting – Social Enterprise

Our meeting last week was a key milestone achievement on the journey of positioning Bristol as the UK’s 1st Social Economy City. We are pleased to let you know that this event was a major success thanks to our partners, and remember you can read the minutes from our meeting here.  We’re also delighted to release the video from the evening here.

  • Sue Turner – CEO Quartet Community Foundation & Lucy Gilbert – Philanthropy Officer (Quartet Community Foundation is A Community Foundation worth over £23 million works across the West of England with individual donors, employers and the public sector to source, manage and distribute funds to support local communities).
  • Karl Belizaire – MD, Social Enterprise Works (a social enterprise development agency supporting Social Economy organisations since 1993)
  • Oliver Mochizuki –  CEO, Fundsurfer (A Social Enterprise providing amazing projects and companies with alternative and traditional finance options including crowdfunding, peer to peer loans, invoice trading, start-up loans and private equity)This event was the kick off, & “Go-Live” for the BJC Social Economy Commission bringing together Charities & Social Enterprise providers, sponsors & partners.

The meeting was the opportunity to discover more about the BJC’s  engagement initiatives to generate a positive social impact within Bristol’s local economy, including:

  • BJC Grant Awards through Babbasa Awards
  • Creation of a commission dedicated to Charities & Social Enterprise
  • BJC endowment pot in Quartet

The revenues generated by our endowment pot will be re-invested towards one of the projects introduced by FundSurfer. For those who could not attend, there is an overview of the project via the links below.

PROJECTS

This will be the opportunity for the BJC to pledge support and contribute to make a difference. The choice of the project belongs to you, our members.  We invite you to choose the cause you wish to support.  You will have the opportunity to vote online.

WHAT’S AHEAD / AGENDA

Following on, there will be Catalyst Projects & opportunities throughout the year, allowing BJC members to:

  • Engage effectively with key players & partners of the Social Economy in Bristol
  • Contribute efficiently in focusing on strategic initiatives & project deliveries

If you wish to board the locomotive and take part in the venture, here are some key dates: October:

  • Communicate & share results on the projects selected
  • Introduce the BJC Social Economy Working Group / Steering Committee

November:

  • Social Economy Landscape and Governance workshop with sessions dedicated to
  1. The variety of legal forms available for the new Social Economy supply chain providers.
  2. Policy, financial mechanisms & incentives to enable the Social Economy

December:

  • Interactive / brainstorming workshop (gathering our members & the Social Economy communities of supporters, providers & partners) in order to.
  1. Get insight on strategic local initiatives
  2. Brainstorming session on how the BJC can support the Social Economy supply chain

Next Year (2017):

  • 1st Convention Summit (2 to 3 days) on the Social Economy in Bristol: Workshop, Business Meetings, Master Class Session.
