Projects

The BJC has a strong reputation for developing and organising projects supporting everything that’s fantastic about Bristol. These projects range from Business and Enterprise, Education and Training, Heritage and Culture, International Exchanges and Influencing.

Influencing

  • The BJC are active contributors to the agenda developed by Business West and the West of England Initiative. Members are involved in strategic forums, influencing policy such as transport and development. Presentations from key influencers across the region enable our membership to engage in debate, expressing the views and opinions of Bristol’s young business leaders.

Business and Enterprise

  • Industrial Visits - Initially developed to discuss developments and their environmental impact, this format has now progressed to industrial visits, providing BJC members with an insight into how other organisations and businesses function. Normally inaccessible to the general public, BJC members gain a fascinating insight into the mechanics of different organisations. Recent visits have included the Houses of Parliament, Bristol Airport Control Tower, Smiles Brewery, Elizabeth Shaw Chocolate Factory, the new National Wildlife Conservation Park project and Bristol Alliance.

Education and Training

  • Schools Interviews - The BJC runs a Schools Mock Interview Service for students aged 15 - 17 to practice their interview technique, prior to attending university/work interviews. BJC members give a presentation to the school group focusing on completing application forms, interview preparation and interview technique before a team of BJC volunteers run mock interviews for the students. A rewarding and often challenging project, BJC members get as much out of this as the students - and it’s particularly good for perfecting that already brilliant interview technique, which we know you have!

Heritage and Culture

  • Brunel 200 - The BJC are always keen to be involved in a celebration, particularly one which involves food and fine wine. So, a BJC group became involved in helping to organise a recreation of the 1843 launch banquet of the ss Great Britain, forming the finale to the Bunel 200 celebrations being held across the region. The finale was fabulous, enjoyed by all and organised by us!
  • Heritage Walk - As anyone who has wandered around Bristol will know, it can be difficult for visitors to find some of the landmarks which make Bristol the city we are so proud of. In order to solve this, the BJC, in partnership with the Bristol Tourist Information Centre, created the Heritage Walk. Since 1984, visitors can follow a 3 mile circular walk around the City Centre, marked by 39 bronze plaques embedded in the City’s pavements. The aim of the walk is to show off the most exciting parts of the City and if it all sounds like a little too much hard work, don’t worry, it has been designed to also take the walker past many of the café’s, restaurants and drinking establishments which Bristol is so proud of!
  • Secret Underground Bristol – Published by the Bristol Junior Chamber, this book highlights the lesser known nooks, crannies and secrets of day to day Bristol which belie it’s past. A very worthwhile read!

International Exchange

As part of an international network, the BJC has a long tradition of involvement with exchange visits, in particular with the Hanover Junior Chamber. Visits alternate every other year with each trip lasting about 3 days, usually over a bank holiday and is always a huge amount of fun. There is usually the chance to meet the Mayor of the relevant city as well as attending a formal dinner, with all other events completely open to the hosting chamber.

These exchange visits provide a wonderful insight into another city and are always enjoyed by those that attend. Over the years, friendships and business contacts have grown and in the future we are hoping to forge new partnerships with both the Milan and Polish Junior Chambers in our exchange programme.
